Astrology at Work

People are different and you need to get along with them. Seeing things from the other person's perspective is a good shortcut. Astrology can help. Just knowing the very basic Sun sign of your coworker can give you a heads-up on their general point-of-view. It gives you a big shortcut to understanding them.

It's pretty easy to find out someone's Sun sign just from the office birthdays. Any office birthdays going on about now are for Scorpio Sun Sign people.

Scorpios at work.

If you have one in your office, you should know that these are the folks who don't ask idle questions. The more innocent the question sounds, the more alert you should be. They don't forget anything--ever. Fairness is not really that important in their worldview. To them, any information you give them is theirs to use. Any information they give to you is not to be shared at all and it's an actionable offense if you do. They are okay with enacting revenge and they are both patient and subtle about it.

See? Good stuff to know. You would approach the above mindset differently than the next in line for birthdays, Sagittarius.

Sagittarius at work.

The people born from mid-November to late-December (go look up the dates, they're all over the Internet...I'm too lazy to go bring them here and write all this) are the Sagittarius Sun people. They aren't into revenge at all, but they are opinionated. When you communicate with a Sagittarius, you should keep in mind that they have a life philosophy that they stick to. They don't all have the same one, but whatever one they have, it rarely changes much. Why? Because they live charmed lives. Unless there are severe constraints elsewhere in their charts, life has a way of just working out for these people and they credit their life philosophy. So, be aware of this. Even if you don't agree. Even if you can provide proof of a countering worldview, don't bother. Just know that when you interact with them, this is where they are coming from and make adjustments as needed in your approach.

Now, that's probably good advice when dealing with everyone. It's just the proper thing to do. Speaking of proper, we're moving on to Capricorn.

Capricorn at work.

From late-December to mid-January, the people with Sun in Capricorn have birthdays. These are folks who know what's proper. It doesn't mean they do it, necessarily. But, they are pretty aware of what society expects of them. They are good at making things happen in the proper timing. If you have one in your workplace, she's probably your boss. Or, she'll be your boss one day. Capricorn is fairly sophisticated when it comes to taking action. No matter what group they're in--and they are always going to be thinking of themselves in relationship to whatever group they're in--they understand how they are perceived by others. Reputation is everything. They are okay with a little more formality. They aren't cold really, it's just what's proper. If you are dealing with a Capricorn in the workplace, just realize that politeness is expected and rules are not to be broken.

Unless you're an Aquarius, the next Sun sign after Capricorn. These people have birthdays starting in the middle of January and going on until mid-February. Though both Capricorn and Aquarius are Saturn-ruled (Yes, I don't think Uranus rules Aquarius. Deal with it.), and therefore very rule-conscious, Aquarius is more likely to view rules as things to be broken.

Aquarius at work.

One thing I have noted about Aquarians over the years is that they like humanity, but think individual people are boring as hell. So, don't take it personally when they give you that impression. These are very intellectual types and they're somewhat burdened with always having their ideals squashed. I mean "ideals" not in the sense that they are dreamers or at all sweet or naive. I mean that they literally live in their heads. Things are perfect in your head, yes? So, when you try to make that translate into the reality we all share, it can get messy. I mean emotional. To an Aquarian, this is distasteful.

Make sure you have their buy-in on whatever you're doing. They aren't likely to actively ruin anything, but--if they dislike the project--they won't dig the project out of trouble, either.

Aquarius, as an air sign, wants to talk about things. As the sign that rules group interaction, they are good operating within a group or team.

(This is about the point where I ran my not-yet-published post past an Aquarian. She said I was being a little snide. I told her to just wait until I get to the description for Aries and then she'll see I can be just as ruthless in assessing my own Sun sign.)

Pisces at work.

Pisces is a chameleon. These are the people born from mid-February until March 20-ish. They can take on the traits of those around them without really thinking about it. This is partly because their nature is pretty evolved (assuming the "we are all one" trajectory of spiritual evolution is true) and they do this naturally. When they talk to you, you are definitely going to get the impression that they are listening and understand, even empathize.

The thing to know is that they do this for everyone. In the workplace, just be aware that signs of sympathy are not necessarily giveaways for what decision they will ultimately make on something. You have to wait for their actions to be sure.

Pisces is peace-loving, but strong. What I mean is that, yes, they prefer for people not to get upset and all that. However, they are able to tolerate short-term discord for long-term harmony. Don't confuse their compassion for weakness.

Also, don't make the mistake of assuming that compassion always means kind. Think about it. the word compassion literally means that you feel what someone else feels. It doesn't automatically also mean you agree with it or it will influence your thinking or actions.

If you're dealing with an evil Pisces, they use compassion to know what you feel about something, but they won't reveal their intentions. They are like psychic CIA agents. Luckily, there aren't that many evil Pisceans.

Aries at work.

Aries is kinda me-centered. It doesn't necessarily mean Aries folks are incapable of noticing other people's needs. It's just not their default position. So, if you work with one, it's not a bad idea to remind the Aries from time to time that other people exist.

Aries people, born between the end of March and the end of April, in the workplace are better suited to leading than following. If you are dealing with one, their primary mode of decision making is intuitive and immediate. Some may tolerate analysis, like if they have aspects from Saturn or Mercury, but it's just not their strongest tool.

The purpose of this sort of functioning is that Aries is designed to be first and/or best. This means they will have to fight and they are equipped to do so, with one caveat. They are designed for speed, not stamina. Intuition is not magic, it's fast subconscious analysis. Aries people trust their intuition and act on it. If you ask them for reasons why they are doing something, they may or may not have an answer. Even if they do have a rational excuse for their behavior, it is probably rationalization as opposed to true motivation.

Aries is concerned with points A and B. They move straight between them. If you're in the way, they might plow through you and may or may not notice or care.

Aries sucks at subterfuge. They're also bad at byzantine revenge plots (if you need one of those, go to Scorpio or Capricorn). First, they have no stamina. Second, they are kind of stupidly honorable, even to the point where they'll announce their attack before attacking.

Also, all Ariens are ambitious, though it may not take the conventional house-career-kids track. Scratch an Aries and you're going to find goals.

Getting along with an Aries in the workplace means not taking them as seriously as they take themselves.

Taurus at work.

Born in one of the Venus-ruled times of the year (from the end of April to the end of May), Taureans are solid, dependable, down-to-earth, and have a lot of integrity (like all the Earth signs). These are the coworkers who can go the distance. Taurus is completely determined. Once they make up their mind, they will absolutely not unmake it without very, very, very compelling reasons.

A Taurus will tolerate a bad situation at work for the longest of anyone. This makes them very good for enduring tough times, but you should not take them for granted. Make sure they aren't being overlooked just because it isn't their style to complain. (If you have a vocal/whiny Taurus, then other factors in their chart are more powerful. Taureans just don't whine much.)

Taurus in the workplace is a low-maintenance employee. Resist the temptation to take advantage of their even temperament. Eventually, if you abuse their good nature for long enough, they will change their minds about work being tolerable. They don't give warnings, they just decide they've had enough and leave. Don't let it get that far.

Gemini at work.

Geminis are the air sign born from the end of May until the end of June. They are extremely versatile and invariably talented. As an air sign, they love to talk. These are the people who will not be bothered by their coworkers stopping by their desk to chat. They are able to listen, contribute to the conversation, and still get their work done.

One note of caution about Geminis, though. They are delicate. Air signs in general are more refined than the other signs of the zodiac. For some reason, Gemini is the most refined. Harsh realities are not really their thing.

On the other hand, nobody is better at sales or customer relationship management than Geminis. Okay, maybe Libras. Maybe. Geminis are expert at knowing where to keep a conversation to achieve a desired end. Unless they've gone totally to the dark side, you can count on them not to offend anyone verbally.

Geminis believe there isn't a problem that cannot be solved by reading about it.

Cancer at work.

You know the people at work who have sort of moved in? They have their special coffee mug and their special rug and their special pillow and their special pet photos and special family photos? These are probably Cancers. Born between the end of June and the end of July, they make a home wherever they go. Also, I have never yet met a Cancer who didn't collect something. Whether than be knickknacks, trivia, books, friends, recipes, or pins in a map, they can't help the impulse to gather and save.

Cancers make good leaders. First, they are one of the Cardinal signs. Second, they are sensitive, but have developed a way to not be obvious about it. In fact, a lack of obviousness is a big feature in their management style. Cancers will get things done directly in some cases, but mostly they approach from the side because they prefer it that way.

Cancers at work are the most likely to think of the company as a family.

They can be passive-aggressive. Don't fall for it.

Leo at work.

Born from the end of July until mid-August, under the sign of the leader, Leos are born to get attention and handle it well. When acknowledged for their unique contributions, they are generous to coworkers, subordinates, and superiors. They will give of themselves until it hurts. It takes forever for that to happen because they're fixed fire, meaning they have seemingly boundless energy.

If, however, they are not recognized, God help you all. A Leo really needs to feel special. When they don't, they can really resent it. It makes them feel bad first because being ignored hurts and second because being ignored makes them feel uncharitable toward others. An ungenerous Leo is a sad thing to see. If you see it, you should know that it's easily fixed by giving them credit for what they do. Even saying "good job," is better than nothing. But a big public display of appreciation is way better.

Virgo at work.

The zodiac's most discerning member, Virgo, is born between late August and mid-September. Virgos are dependable, analytical, practical, rational, and dislike ambiguity. Virgos are, at heart, engineers. They respect precision and hope for perfection.

If they are not literally engineers at work, rest assured that they are behaving this way in some form or fashion in their lives. (Depends on the house placement, which you would not know without getting their birthtime and place of birth. Just trust me on this.)

Though they have reputations for being perfectionists, this is not exactly correct. Remember, they are practical and rational. So, they do recognize that perfection is unattainable. But, they use perfection as the goal to judge progress. They are always tweaking things.

When you speak to a Virgo, don't say "about," or "approximately," or "somewhat." Use measurements. Be specific. If you don't, they'll only ask you for this information anyway. Save yourself some time.

Libras at work.

Libra is the air sign that falls between the end of September and the end of October. Known as a relationship sign (being both an air sign and also Venus-ruled), Libra is pleasant to be around. Libras will most definitely want to get your opinion on things before they decide what to do. In fact, they need to do this.

Without interacting with another, Libra has no chance to know themself. That's one reason why the Sun is weakest here. Be aware that this is how they function. They are not likely to assert themselves over another person, except in rare cases. Even if they do, there's a good chance their effort is being propped up by someone else. Libras will never, ever, ever "go it alone."

Libras make wonderful impressions on other people and are very diplomatic. They just want to get along and will make an effort to do so. Consequently, they are fine with the team work model.

Seeing the situation through another's eyes.

Astrology is such a good tool for this, as you can see. I could have expanded each of the examples but already this post is already almost out of control, LOL.

Autumn Wholistic Festival

As a newly-minted professional astrologer, I'm doing a lot of things for the first time. Yesterday, I worked at the Autumn Wholistic Festival. I did a bunch of quickie readings and it was a lot of fun hanging out with the metaphysical crowd.

As a side note, I guess I now know where to find fellow Pisces Moons. When we're not hanging out (hiding out?) in private, we're going to psychic fairs. I ran into three at this thing!

Moon in Aries

With the Full Moon in Aries today, I'm thinking about how the fiery qualities of Aries blend into the nurturing, mellow, caring Moon. The truth is: not very well.

Mellow Moon...
The Moon symbolizes many things, on many levels. The Moon is instinct, the past, emotion. As a symbol, she is subtle, varied, and multi-layered. In a birth chart, she represents how the native views his or her mother. She indicates what instincts the native has. The Moon describes a person's innate emotional nature. She also is the passive drawing power a person has. The Moon shows nurturing style and what kind of stress-monster one becomes when pushed.

...pure fire...
In Aries, the fire element is all about a single identity and unadulterated will. Strangely, this simplicity does not always makes Aries a blunt instrument. Aries is the sign of the warrior, but fighting is not the objective, just the side-effect. Aries knows what it is, what it wants, and is on a path to getting it. The world being what it is, making it all happen directly will involve conflict.

That's really the root of the challenge in folding in the Moon with such a sign. The pacifist Moon is not at ease wearing the red flag of Aries. Whether speaking about the transiting Moon or one in a birth chart, Aries qualities take the place of what would otherwise be rather timid.

...hello feisty.
So, Moon in Aries by transit means we're all a little more direct. As Aries is the sign representing beginnings, we start things during this transit. This translates to some faster driving on the roadways, more assertion during meetings, and more sex, for a few examples. Taking this to the personal level, in a birth chart it is much the same.

Bold Femininity
Someone with natal Moon in Aries has immediate and passionate responses to things. They nurture themselves with contests and competition (on a spectrum from blunt to subtle), with action, and with being direct. They need a lot of "me" time to feel secure. Their mothers were the same way. At least, that's how the child viewed the mother. Growing up, he or she was taught by Mom that taking care of him-or herself was okay, even important. The feminine side is a little more assertive, more in control, more sure of itself.

Quick-Read A Chart

Introduction
I do a lot of quick chart readings at psychic fairs and coffee shops and the like. Most people in these settings are looking to have fun, not change their lives. This is where astrology meets entertainment and I'm okay with that. There's plenty of room to have a little fun and still be helpful. If someone wants more, you can provide a full consultation at another time.

Read the Map
Luckily, astrology charts are like little maps in a fairly straightforward language. Once you understand the language, you're really off and running to understanding the person you're reading. You can do it fast and still provide substance. For a quick-read, I do it in order from most important to least important parts of the map.

Begin with the Ascendant
I start here because the Ascendant is the person's user-interface. It's how they behave and the mode of operation they use in dealing with others, and the part of themselves that they are most likely to recognize.

It's also the key to the chart's ruling planet. So, let's say you're reading for someone with Scorpio Rising. Their ruling planet is Mars (or...Pluto if you're not old school). Look at what Mars is doing. What House does he live in? What Sign is he wearing? How does he interact (aspects) with other planets?

Follow the Story
Look at where the chart ruler points you. In the case of the Mars chart ruler, I'd check to see if he's in harmony or friction with the lights (the Sun and Moon). Next, I look at the lights themselves and whether they are in harmony or discord with one another.

Day or Night?
If the Sun is above the horizon, it's a day chart and the Sun is the important light. If the Sun is below the horizon, then it's a night chart and the person's light is the Moon. Give weight to the appropriate light.

Planet Placement
Look at the placement of the Sun and Moon by house and sign to see where this person focuses their energy. You can safely assume they value these areas of life pretty highly. Then, look at the other planets, beginning with the personal planets and working outward. Add special indicators last.

Angles
Anything right on the Angles of the chart is really important. Even if it's a lesser astrological body, like an asteroid, I would tend to pay more attention to it if it lives on one of the angles.

Summary
The key in quick reading is discernment: knowing how to sift through the large amount of information you see in a chart. It's an acquired skill.

Getting Started

If you know where to look, the Internet can really speed your basic astrological understanding.

Start with a Chart
To cast your birth chart, Astro Dienst is particularly good because their chart service is free. If you create a profile, you can save it and any others you wish as your study expands.

Learn Signs, Houses, Planets, Aspects
There's a great deal of information to be had at the beginner level, but I recommend Cafe Astrology in particular because it doesn't over complicate things. Learning the signs, the houses, the planets, and the main aspects (a.k.a. Ptolemaic aspects), will get you started.

Practice
The best way to understand the art of astrology is to read charts. Lots of them.

It's easier if you can get charts for people you're not intimately involved with, at least while you're still learning. Celebrity charts are awesome for this reason. Be sure you have good birth data, though. I suggest using Astro Databank as a reliable source. They include the Rodden rating for all their data.

Join the Astrological Community
Go to conferences. Network at trade group meetings. Joing meetups. Converse on forums. There is only so much you can learn online or from books. These resources will get you to the next level.

What Astrology Isn't

Art or Science?

Though astrology has common ancestry with modern astronomy, it is a different animal altogether now. Plenty of astrologers consider astrology to be scientific. I am not one of them; I think it's an art.

Science is the painstaking search for truth that involves objective observation, data compilation, hypothesis generation/testing/evaluation, theory creation, and peer review. Art, on the other hand, seeks to get to truth by relying less on academic rigor and more on emotional connection, insight, intuition, and creativity.

By these definitions, astrology is not science. Much of astrology is not objective at all and shouldn't be. Casting someone's birthchart shows you their perspective on their world. That's inherently unscientific. It's debatable whether or not it is any less true.

A Language of Correspondence

I can't claim that the planets influence us, only that their movements can be interpreted as a symbolic language of correspondence. Nobody has ever been able to explain, to my satisfaction, just why it works so well. It just does. Even with this required leap of faith (or ambiguity tolerance), astrology is not a belief system nor a religion. You don't worship it anymore than you would worship any other language or tool.
